The last time Tifa saw Cloud, she was this scrappy little tomboy who used to get in fights all the time. She barely recognizes this man--this SOLDER--as the Cloud from her memories.
(idk maybe Cloud always considered himself a boy and just didn't have the words for it until he moved to Midgar, or maybe it turned into a forced masculinization thing because of the Mako experimentation Hojo put him through, coupled with him taking on Zack's identity.... maybe he took on his gender as well)
